General Characteristics:
The Staff Engineer II in the Energy Analysis Group (EAG) must have demonstrated practical experience, competence, and proven expertise in evaluating state-of-the-art building energy-efficiency technologies and managing sustainable design assistance projects. He or she must be experienced with hourly simulation software programs and industry-accepted engineering methods for evaluating energy performance. In addition, s/he must able to provide quality assurance review of analysis methods, simulation results, and project deliverables. The candidate must be a team player willing to contribute to and build EAG methods, knowledge, and capabilities. S/he should have a strong background in the design and operation of mechanical heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and knowledge of the specialized HVAC requirements of highly technical facilities, such as hospitals and laboratories. Candidates should have experience working within the architectural design process and understand design team members' roles, perspectives, and analysis needs. A holistic understanding of whole building and mechanical systems and a strong commitment to state-of-the-art design innovations are essential.
Direction Received:
The Staff Engineer II should be fully capable of performing all aspects of whole-building energy analysis associated with completing sustainable design projects. The position requires strong management and client interaction skills to develop and carry out a tailored evaluation approach well-suited to the project and design team objectives. S/he must be able to coordinate work responsibilities between Sustainable Design Assistance (SDA) staff and manage EAG staff to complete EAG tasks.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Employee will be a member of EAG within the Sustainable Design Assistance (SDA) Team and will manage projects as assigned by the EAG Manager and SDA Team Leader. Typical duties may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Provide technical services and management for sustainable design assistance projects;
- Perform detailed energy modeling, evaluation of complicated building systems, and life-cycle-cost analysis;
- Provide clear and well-written memorandums, and reports to various clients (building owners, architects, engineers) regarding project specific energy performance and modeling results;
- Conduct quality assurance reviews to ensure engineering quality and accurate technical content of project-related documents;
- Meet / contact clients as appropriate to discuss energy analysis methods, results and recommendations;
- Prepare analyses, calculations and reports to support energy-related LEED components; and
- Travel to in-state and out-of-state projects as required.
Skills & Background Required:
A candidate for this position must have the following skills / background:
- Excellent communication skills — oral, written, and presentation — and facility with necessary supporting software (Microsoft: Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
- Expertise in complex building mechanical systems and state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies/ applications;
- 5+ yrs energy modeling experience with DOE-2, TRNSYS, E-Plus or other detailed hourly simulation;
- Project management experience; including people and time management skills;
- Working knowledge of and experience with the architectural design process and all phases of design/build from pre-design to construction administration;
- Working knowledge of the USGBC's LEED certification systems (NC, EB, CI, etc.), and LEED AP status;
- Graduate-level engineering degree & PE registration; and
- Ability to travel out of state.
Skills and Background Recommended:
A preferred candidate for this position may also have the following skills / background:
- 10+ years experience in a building related field, preferably experience in mechanical engineering, HVAC design, commissioning or building operations.
- Experience in designing/evaluating state-of-the-art sustainable design technologies for commercial new construction that might include: natural ventilation, mixed-mode ventilation, solar cooling, etc.
- Experience with additional simulation software programs tailored to sustainable design analysis, such as: DesignBuilder, Virtual Environment, Ecotect, etc.
