The energy code and appliance standard will reduce peak demand for electricity in addition to reducing energy use. Electric demand is extremely important on Guam as electric generating capacities are limited. It is estimated that implementation of the code and appliance standard will reduce the growth of electricity demand by about 16 megawatts each year. About 51% of the demand reduction is due to the building code and 49% is due to the appliance standard. In Figure 4 the building envelope and lighting demand reductions are due to the building code, while the air conditioner and water heater demand reductions are due to the appliance standard.
Interior and exterior lighting represents 25%, or about 4,000 kW of peak demand reductions (see Figure 4). About 2,700 kW of the lighting peak demand reductions are from new construction and about 1,200 kW from existing construction.
Better building envelopes represent 26%, or about 4,100 kW of the demand reductions. The requirements for concrete (mass) roofs account for most of the reductions in peak demand attributed to the building envelope. Reductions in solar gain through windows is next in terms of importance. See Figure 5 for more information.
More efficient air conditioners account for about 29% of peak demand reductions, or about 4,800 kW (see Figure 4). About 3,000 kW of the air conditioner peak demand reductions are from existing construction and about 1,800 kW from new construction.
Water heating requirements are 20% of the peak demand reduction, or about 3,100 kW. About 1,900 kW of the water heating peak demand reductions are from existing construction and about 1,200 kW from new construction (see Figure 4).
In terms of building types, single-family homes contribute the most to reducing peak demand (4.5 MW). highrise hotels and offices are next, accounting for about 2.4 MW each. See Figure 6 for more details.
