The project on Advanced LED Downlighting Systems developed a component-based system specifically tailored to the unique characteristics of LED light sources. The new LED downlights are more energy efficient and cost effective than LED downlights based on components intended for CFL light sources. The resulting prototype is an indirect LED downlight system that optimizes its components for the LED light sources while maintaining the features and functionality that have made downlights so popular.

The following images show the indirect LED prototype (left image). The proposed system can have up to 10 units with one power supply. Prototype units are installed (right image) at the California Lighting Technology Center in Davis, California.

This product has not been commercialized and discussions with potential manufacturing partners are ongoing.
