The project on Advanced LED Lighting for Residential and Commercial Applications developed a prototype system for use in homes and commercial buildings. The LED lighting system is based on the LRC's patented SPE ™ (Scattered Photon Extraction) technology, which has been shown to improve significantly the efficacy and light output of current generation LED technology.
Seven SPE-based LED downlight prototype units are shown on a table (left), and six of them installed in an open area lab at the Lighting Research Center (right).
The average performance characteristics of the seven prototypes produced are:
-
Lumen Output 720 lm at 9.5W
-
System Efficacy 76 lm/W
-
CRI of 75 at 3500 K
-
Life (L-70) rating 50,000 hrs (junction temperature = 44 °C)
-
Light Distribution General diffuse
-
Labor costs are the same as comparable CFL or incandescent
Appropriate applications are commercial lobbies, offices, conference rooms, open areas and hospitality lobbies, reception areas, corridors, and general open areas.
The LRC is exploring commercialization opportunities.
