Improved Tubular Daylighting Devices

The project on Improved Daylight Performance of Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs) will develop, demonstrate, and help to commercialize new diffuser elements that redirect a significant portion of the emitted daylight towards the ceiling and precisely filter and spread the rest, producing a direct/indirect luminaire effect. The result will be to increase the acceptance of TDD daylighting systems by introducing systems with luminance ratios that are closer to the accepted norms for interior spaces. Project partners are CLTC and Solatube International, Inc.

Breakthrough concept designs have been developed by Solatube, and testing of the concepts is ongoing. Southern California Edison will provide support to the CLTC and Solatube during the demonstration phase, which is planned for late 2009. Commercialized products resulting from this research are planned for 2010.
