Project 4.4 Portable Office Lighting Systems - Projected Market Impacts

Projected Market Impacts for the Portable Office Lighting Systems work are as follows:

  • Reduce peak demand and energy consumption in individual office spaces by 30 to 50 percent with portable office lighting systems.
  • Provide statewide potential energy savings of 1500 GW hr/year (100 percent market penetration).
  • Improve health and safety of building occupants by reducing indirect glare on Video Display Terminals (VDTs) and providing high-quality, user-controlled office lighting systems.
  • Increase customer choices for efficient operation of buildings by putting a high quality office lighting system on the market.

This new system will have widespread potential application in many office environments. The benefits derived from the improved design include better work environments and increased energy savings. The new system may also improve health and safety of building occupants by reducing glare on VDTs. This screen glare can be measured as luminance from the computer screen surface.

It is anticipated that peak energy demand in office spaces can be reduced 30 to 50 percent. These power savings can be measured with data logging power meters. These meters give kW-hr measurements that can be used to estimate annual energy savings based on the market penetration of the new fixture.

Project Information for Portable Office Lighting Systems

Baseline measurements will need to be collected prior to the installation of the new fixture. The same information from the data loggers can also be used to judge the performance of occupancy controls. Comparisons with baseline data will show the energy savings due to the integration of this feature.
