Advanced Lighting Luminaires & Systems Element:
Project 4.5 Integrated Classroom Lighting System - Baseline Conditions

A 97 percent reflective material was developed by one of the leading plastic and paint manufacturers in the US. However, this material was not originally designed to meet the requirements need to build light fixtures suitable for classrooms. Accordingly, research needs to be conducted to add properties to the base line material such as stability under UV light and the ability to pass V2 flammability tests.

Additional mechanical properties will need to be characterized to demonstrate that the material can stand up to the expected abuse that it will likely experience in the classroom environment. Upon completion of the material development effort, the requirements to bring this new material to production levels will need to be researched so that it can become a commercially viable component in light fixtures for classrooms. The formula to the reflective material is proprietary to the manufacturer, FERRO Industries, and will remain their intellectual property.

No classroom lighting system is currently available from one turnkey supplier that will warranty its entire operation. To accomplish this, new business relationships will need to be established and / or new products developed.
