Project 2.1 LED Luminaires for Exterior Porch and Perimeter Lighting - Prior Research

Over the last 2 years, LBNL has been researching and identifying new fixture concepts and residential opportunities for LED light sources. This was funded by both the Laboratory Technology Research program and through a CRADA with Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

The LED Luminaires for Exterior Porch and Perimeter Lighting project builds on this effort directly. Key findings and directions from this research include:

  • Potential near term fixture opportunities for LEDs.
  • A series of prototype fixtures for different applications.
  • A detailed series of concept prototypes for porch lighting systems.

The research efforts with the hotel industry have also indicated both a potential and interest for next generation entry way/porch lighting applications. These fixtures on the exterior entryway of many motel-hotel applications have very long operational hours and involve significant maintenance costs.
