Project 2.3 LED Low Profile Fixtures for Applications such as Under-cabinet, Shelf, and Display Lighting - Prior Research

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is currently involved in a number of groundbreaking projects focused on developing LEDs into efficient, cost-effective architectural light sources. These projects include:

  • The LED Lighting Institute - an education program for architects and lighting and luminaire designers to help promote innovation in the use of solid state lighting.
  • Use of Colored LEDs in Display Window Applications - research into the energy-saving and aesthetic benefits of using colored LEDs in retail store displays.
  • Characterizing the performance and optical characteristics of two types of "white" LED systems (red, green, and blue mixed vs. phosphor) quantifying total light output, distribution, color characteristics, and lumen depreciation.
  • Color discrimination of white LEDs - a study to determine a 3D color discrimination model for white LEDs as an illuminant.
  • Optical modeling for LED luminaires - developing optical models for luminaires using solid-state light sources.
  • Development of a nitride-based laser diode for architectural lighting applications - a joint project with the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).
