Project 6.3. Lighting R&D/Codes Scoping Study - Projected Market Impacts

The quantifiable market impacts of this project cannot be known at the outset, because the R&D results are not yet known. During the course of this project, however, likely market impacts of each code-ready result will be estimated. These estimated impacts shall be documented in project deliverables.

The anticipated market impacts, however, can be described qualitatively. These impacts include standards requirements that mandate the use of technologies to reduce installed lighting power density, and that reduce the hours of operation of lighting systems. These standards will apply to broad classes of both residential and nonresidential lighting applications, and they will be applied in most new construction and renovation projects in California during the years following their adoption into code.

The cumulative energy and demand impacts, as well as the impacts on product application and lighting system design, will be long-term and persistent, and will increase over the years as more and more buildings are built to the new standards. Based on past experience, the expectation is for the requirements to increase the market availability of the more efficient lighting measures, and to simultaneously reduce the cost of these measures.
