Integrated Classroom
Lighting System

Classroom

Concept:

A single lighting system with a single manufacturer's warranty that simplifies the requisition process for schools trying to meet high energy performance standards by providing direct-indirect fixtures, occupancy and daylight sensors, and plug-and-play interconnection cables.

Solution:

PIER's manufacturing partner, Finelite, Inc., coats their direct-indirect fixtures with an innovative 96% reflective material, allowing for only two rows of fixtures instead of the traditional three rows. With the Integrated Classroom Lighting System, schools receive premium lighting and controls for less than the cost of standard 2x4 fixtures. Nineteen demonstration classrooms have shown energy savings of 30 to 50 percent over current Title 24 levels.

Finelite has developed the following literature based on the ICLS for use by lighting designers, specifiers, and school representatives.

The energy monitoring data from the 2003/04 school year is available for the 25 California classrooms monitored at the six schools under this project. 19 of the classrooms had variations of the ICLS installed and 6 of the classrooms had typical 2X4 lay-in troffer T-8 lighting. The zip files for five of the schools are posted below and vary from ~8 to 32 MB.
