Fenestration Studies for ASHRAE Standard 90.1
AEC developed life-cycle cost procedures to develop the fenestration requirements of ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999. AEC collected data on the typical costs associated with glazing technologies, such as low-e coatings, reflective films, and argon/krypton gas fills, and then combined the with DOE-2 models to estimate energy use. The whole package was integrated in a computer program, which served as the technical basis of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999.
Research work in glazing, overhangs, and daylighting resulted in a set of requirements for glazing performance (U-value, shading coefficient, and visible light transmission) rather than simple limits on glazing area. Work also included a survey of nonresidential window costs.

ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Economic Model
AEC developed a computer model that can be used to modify the building envelope requirements of ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 for any combination of electricity price, fuel price, heating system type, cooling system type, or economic conditions. The program produces cost-effective building envelope criteria for any set of user specified conditions. The program uses data and procedures that provide the basis of Standard 90.1. |
