Project Details
The Government Service Administration (GSA) has built a new office building to house the U.S. Department of Transportation in Lakewood, Colorado. The 129,000 SF office building earned a LEED® Silver Rating, exceeding GSA's expectations of a LEED® Certified building. While not veering far from traditional design and construction practices, the building was able to achieve project sustainability goal primarily through careful consideration of design alternatives and heighten attention to detail throughout the construction process.

The project reduces the heat island effect by installing a high reflectance coating on the parking structure and a white roof on the building. On-site water use reduction was achieved through efficient landscape and irrigation design. Nearly 75% of the construction waste on the project was recycled and low VOC paints, adhesives and carpets were used for the building's interior. Finally, an indirect-direct evaporative cooling system eliminates the use of HCFC refrigerants and results in 30% energy savings over an ASHRAE 90.1998 baseline building.

Sustainable Design Features

  • LEED® Silver Certification
  • 30% energy savings over ASHRAE 90.1-1999
  • Direct-indirect evaporative cooling with an economizer cycle produce significant energy savings for cooling
  • Exterior shading devices and the open office plan combine to provide access to daylight and views from the majority of the regularly occupied spaces
  • High indoor air quality is achieved through the use of low-VOC paints, adhesives and carpets
  • Exemplary construction waste management resulting in 75% of construction waste being diverted from the landfill
  • CO2 sensors used to reduce ventilation rates when occupants are not present
