The Corporate Express World Headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado houses the administrative offices and central information systems of this international business and office supply company. Designed to provide a comfortable, healthy and productive work environment for its corporate staff, the design also achieves high levels of energy efficient and environmental responsiveness. A large daylit atrium connects the four administrative wings of the building. An innovative two-tiered optical daylighting system, developed by Architectural Energy Corporation, is used throughout the building to redirect daylighting deep into the open office areas. Photosensors dim the high efficiency electric lighting in response to daylight availability. A direct/indirect evaporative cooling system provides energy efficient mechanical cooling to the building.
Sustainable Design Features
- High levels of energy efficiency have been integrated in all building elements — wall and ceiling insulation, glazings, electric lighting, mechanical systems, and controls.
- High performance, low-emissivity glazing tuned by orientation and function.
- Aggressive daylighting of all open and enclosed open spaces using an innovative, two-tiered optical daylighting systems developed by Architectural Energy Corporation.
- High efficiency electric lighting system using an ambient/task design approach, and daylight (photosensor) controls on all ambient light fixtures.
- Direct/indirect evaporative cooling to eliminate need for CFC-based mechanical cooling, with variable volume air-handling and VFDs on all motor fans and pumps.
- Low environmental materials used throughout to improve air quality and to reduce environmental impact of construction.
