Project Details
As a concrete demonstration of its commitment to environmental quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) included energy efficiency and sustainable design as key design goals for its New England Regional Laboratory in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) pilot rating scheme was used to guide the identification and selection of sustainable design features. A LEED Gold rating was achieved through an integrated design which includes high performance glazings; an innovative window shading-photovolatic system; daylighting; high efficiency electrical lighting and mechanical systems; water efficient appliances; and low environmental impact materials, products and systems. The EPA Laboratory is also a winner of the Government Service Administration (GSA) Environmental Award.

Sustainable Design Features

  • LEED v. 1 Gold Rating awarded
  • Planning for a sustainable site, improving energy efficiency, conserving material and resources, enhancing indoor environmental quality, and safeguarding water were all carefully researched and implemented in the building design and construction.
